Over 2.5 goals: how often it hits and how totals work

What over and under bets are, how often football matches go over 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 goals across thousands of games, and how tipsters bet totals.

By BetBuddyRank editorial team

Totals are among the most common markets for tipsters on X: BetBuddyRank has graded 14,706 such picks against final scores. To see what a total is worth, we also counted goals in 20,997 senior football matches: below is how often each line from 0.5 to 5.5 hits, how quarter totals work and how tipster overs and unders perform.

What an over/under bet is

A total, or over/under, is a bet on how many goals, points or runs a game will have: more or fewer than the line. In football (soccer) totals use regular time plus stoppage time; in hockey, basketball, the NFL and MLB overtime and extra innings count.

  • Half lines (2.5, 3.5): there is no push. Over 2.5 wins with three goals or more.
  • Whole lines (2, 3): if the game lands exactly on the line, the stake is returned.
  • Quarter lines (2.25, 2.75): the stake is split between the two nearest lines. The full outcome table is in the guide to the Asian handicap.

How often over 2.5 goals hits in football

We counted goals in 20,997 senior football matches in regular time, leaving out women’s and youth competitions. This is how often each line hits:

LineOverUnder
0.593.8%6.2%
1.578.4%21.6%
2.556.6%43.4%
3.535.1%64.9%
4.519.5%80.5%
5.59.4%90.6%

Over 2.5 hits in 56.6% of matches, so the fair price for that line in an average match is about 1.77 in decimal odds. In a given game the chance can differ a lot: it depends on the attacks, the teams’ style and the competition, and the average share does not replace judging the match.

Totals of 2, 2.25 and 2.75: how the payout works

On a whole line an exact number of goals is a push: over 2 with two goals returns the stake. A quarter line splits the stake: over 2.25 is half on over 2 and half on over 2.5, over 2.75 is half on over 2.5 and half on over 3.

How tipsters bet totals

Tipster totals from X, across all sports, win 61.2% of the time against 62.3% expected, with an ROI of +0.9% on priced picks. By direction:

PickPicksHit rateExpectedROI
Over10,00864.4%65.8%+4.5%
Under4,69854.3%54.8%−6.3%

The expectation here accounts for the line and the teams: a high hit rate on over 1.5 is built into the line itself. So compare the hit rate with the expectation, not with 50%.

How to use totals data

  • Compare the price with the share of matches: if over 2.5 hits in 56.6% of matches, the fair price is about 1.77, and anything shorter loses money in an average match.
  • Look at the specific teams and competition: the average over all matches hides big differences between leagues.
  • Mind the grading rules: in football totals use regular time, and extra time and penalty shootouts do not count.
  • When judging a tipster, compare the hit rate of their totals with the expectation, as the guide on how to check a tipster explains.
